A Paddlecult surf guide speaking with guests on the beach

Built by the ocean. Made for people.

Two people from different landscapes found their way to the same ocean, and built a place where other people could find belonging.

The Paddlecult story

Two journeys. One shared ocean.

Sometimes, all it takes is one wave to change a life.

Paddlecult began with two people who found their way to the ocean from very different places.

Blacky grew up in the coastal village of Kovalam, where the ocean was part of everyday life. One day, he saw someone standing on a surfboard and gliding across a wave. He had never seen anything like it. That first wave changed the direction of his life.

Meanwhile, Sebin grew up in the mountains, but was always drawn to water. As a child, he spent his time swimming, playing in rivers, getting caught in the rain, and finding every possible way to be near water. For Sebin, the ocean eventually became something like a best friend.

Two very different journeys led them to Varkala. Blacky had spent years teaching surfing and helping grow the surf community in Kerala. Sebin had built a career in travel before the pandemic forced him to rethink his future.

Then they met. They started with ordinary conversations. But over time, they began talking about everything—surfing, travel, life, business, and the future.

They were very different people. Sebin was curious, spontaneous, and always eager to chase the next idea. Blacky was calm, thoughtful, experienced, and patient. Perhaps that was exactly why they worked.

One day, Sebin asked a simple question: “Why don’t we build something here instead?” Blacky said yes.

At first, the idea was simple: build something around surfing. But the dream grew.

In 2022, they found an old property in Varkala that needed extensive renovation. Where other people saw a tired building, they saw the beginning of a place they would want to visit themselves. They invested their own savings and spent countless hours rebuilding it with the help of friends.

Friends painted walls, built spaces, planted gardens, moved materials and poured their energy into every corner. Paddlecult was never built by two people alone; community was part of the place before the first guests arrived.

They imagined a place where people could learn to surf, stay longer, meet new people, connect with nature, move their bodies, share food, discover new experiences, and feel at home. That dream became Paddlecult.

Today, Paddlecult is growing into something bigger than a surf school. It is a place for surfing, accommodation, yoga, food, skating, adventure, creativity, and community.

But underneath everything, the idea remains simple. Create a place where people can find something they did not know they were looking for.

Maybe it is their first wave. Maybe it is a new friend. Maybe it is a new skill. Maybe it is a moment of freedom. Maybe it is simply a place where they can slow down, breathe, and feel like themselves again.

Because two people from different backgrounds found their way to the ocean, found each other, and decided to build a place where other people could find something too.

And sometimes, all it takes is one wave to change a life.

Blacky · From Kovalam to Paddlecult

The ocean gave him a purpose.

A childhood beside the waves became a life shaped by them.

I was born and raised in the coastal village of Kovalam, Kerala, where the ocean was part of everyday life. As children, we spent endless hours swimming, fishing, and playing on the beach. Back then, nobody in our community knew what surfing was. The waves were simply something we lived beside.

Everything changed one day when we saw someone standing on a surfboard, gliding across a wave. We had never seen anything like it. We stood there watching in complete amazement.

That surfer was a Belgian who had come to Kovalam with a dream of introducing surfing to the local community through what became the Kovalam Surf Club. Curious, we walked over and asked if he could teach us. None of us realized that a simple conversation on the beach would change the course of our lives forever.

Surfing in India was still in its infancy. There were only a handful of boards, and many kids had to share the same equipment. We would wait patiently for our turn, spending every possible minute in the ocean. Looking back, those challenges only made us appreciate every wave even more.

I’ll never forget the first time I stood up on a surfboard. It lasted only a few seconds, but in that moment everything around me disappeared. I wasn’t thinking about school, expectations, or the future. It was just me, the wave, and a feeling of freedom I had never experienced before.

From that day on, I knew surfing would always be part of who I am.

As my passion grew stronger, I faced one of the hardest decisions of my life. I chose to leave university and dedicate myself fully to surfing. It was a decision my family couldn’t understand. They worried about the dangers of the ocean and couldn’t imagine surfing becoming a real career.

Those years were difficult. There were disagreements, uncertainty, and moments when I questioned myself. Eventually, I left home to follow the path I truly believed in. It wasn’t easy, but sometimes the hardest decisions become the ones that shape your future.

The Kovalam Surf Club became my second home. There, I developed not only as a surfer but as a person. I later earned my International Surfing Association Instructor certification, allowing me to teach professionally.

What started as a childhood dream became my profession. Over the last decade, I have had the privilege of teaching thousands of people how to surf. Teaching quickly became just as rewarding as surfing itself. I was also involved in community projects that introduced surfing and education to children from underprivileged backgrounds.

Seeing a child catch their very first wave, then paddle back with the biggest smile on their face, reminded me of my own first experience. Watching their confidence grow, both in and out of the water, showed me that surfing can change lives in ways that go far beyond the sport itself.

My journey eventually brought me to Varkala, where I worked with one of the town’s first surf schools and continued helping the local surf community grow.

At one point, I had already decided that my future was elsewhere. Many of my close friends had moved to Portugal, and my bags were almost packed. I truly believed my next chapter would begin there.

Then life surprised me. I met Sebin.

What started as ordinary conversations slowly turned into something much bigger. We spent hours talking about surfing, travel, community, and the future.

One day, he asked a simple question: “Why don’t we build something here instead?” That single conversation changed everything.

Instead of leaving India, we chose to stay and build a dream together. That dream became Paddlecult.

“The ocean has always been my home. Through Paddlecult, I hope everyone who visits can experience that same feeling.”

Sebin · From Kanchiyar to the sea

The ocean became his best friend.

Water was calling long before Sebin found the ocean.

I was born in Kanchiyar, a small village in the hills of Kerala. I grew up far from the sea, but I always dreamed of living by the ocean.

My journey took me to Coimbatore for college and later to Georgia, where I worked while continuing my studies. Life did not unfold the way I had planned, and I eventually returned to India. Looking back, that unexpected turn became one of the biggest blessings in my life.

I have always been drawn to water.

As a child, I would find any excuse to be near it. I loved swimming, getting caught in the rain, and spending time around rivers, dams, and anywhere else that kept me close to water. Sometimes, I would even sneak out of the house to go swimming with my friends, even though my parents were worried and didn’t want me going.

Water always made me feel free.

Years later, after the COVID-19 pandemic, my travel agency business came to a stop. Like many people, I suddenly found myself having to rethink my future. I knew I wanted to build something new.

Around the same time, I started surfing and met Blacky.

I quickly saw something special in him. He had years of experience in surfing, a genuine nature, a calm way of thinking, and a deep understanding of the sport and the world around it.

I am the opposite in many ways. I am curious, impatient, and often ready to jump into something without thinking twice. Blacky thinks slowly and carefully. I move quickly. Somehow, that difference felt like a strength.

After spending months together, talking about everything from surfing and business to life and the future, I asked him one day: “Why don’t we start something together?” He said yes.

The idea was simple at first. We both loved surfing. We understood that surfing was growing in Kerala and around the world. We believed it could become a way for us to make a living while building something we genuinely cared about.

In the beginning, our vision was to build something connected to every part of surfing—from surf schools and accommodation to boards, leashes, clothing, and everything else around the sport. But as the idea grew, so did the dream.

For me, the ocean has become like a best friend.

When I am stressed, I go to the ocean. When I am happy, I go to the ocean. When I am bored, I go to the ocean.

When I jump into the water, I feel calmer. I feel lighter. I feel cooled down. I feel empty in the best possible way. The ocean has become a place where I can reset.

And that is what I want Paddlecult to give other people.

A place to connect with nature. A place to connect with animals. A place to connect with other people. A place to be alone when you need it. A place to make great memories. A place that feels a little like home.

And, hopefully, a place that makes you want to come back soon. That is what I wanted to build. And then I met someone who helped me build it.

Beyond Paddlecult, I am passionate about growing surfing in India. As President of the Surf Kerala Association, I work to create opportunities for young surfers, support the local surfing community, and help develop the sport for future generations.

“The ocean gave me a new direction in life. Paddlecult is my way of sharing that journey with others.”
